Moonlight Madness is an adult shopping extravaganza. Merchants use this opportunity to get rid of old stock at outrageously low prices and showcase new stock. This is often the first time locals have a chance to see what the area businesses are planning for the holidays. The appeal to the businesses is the increased traffic flow and the enthusiasm within the staff for developing the theme and dressing up.

Different businesses adapt the event to match their needs and hours. Some banks decorate during the day and have people come in for punch and cookies. Many retailers dress up all day, and others only dress up at night. Several businesses have specials throughout the day or during the evening hours. Some of the discounts increase as the day goes on with the biggest discounts the last hour they are open, generally from 8-9 at night.

For the employees of the participating businesses, an appreciation party is held at the end of the evening.
