5 fun, FREE things to do this weekend at Inks Lake State Park

There is an endless list of reasons why visiting or living in the Highland Lakes area is such a treat, and one reason we can all agree on is the countless opportunities to experience the great outdoors. Inks Lake State Park is just one of those opportunities, offering family fun both on water and on land. With its sparkling blue water, colorful rock outcrops, and striking sunsets, this gem of the Hill Country is a surefire way to experience nature at it’s finest.

Here are 5 super fun, FREE things you can do this weekend at Inks Lake State Park! State park entrance fees apply.


1. Hike the Hill Country

Hike the backcountry trails and see some spectacular Hill Country views, for FREE! (Entrance fees apply)

Set out on a rugged 2-3 mile adventure with one of the park rangers as they take you to some breathtaking views of the area. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring adequate water and a snack! Closed toed shoes will be required.

Hikers will meet at the Pecan Flats trailhead at 9 a.m., Friday May 19th


2. Fish with a Ranger

All are welcome for a FREE catch and release instructional program at Inks Lake State Park. The best part? No fishing license is required while on state park property! Don’t have bait and tackle? No problem! The park will provide the poles and the worms. No reservations necessary!

Participants of this FREE program (entrance fees apply) will meet behind the park store at 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 19th.


3. Starry Sky Night Hike

Experience the beauty of the trails at Inks Lake State Park as the sun goes down! Groups will head to the green trail summit in a 1.5 mile hike with incredible scenic views along the way. It will be a great opportunity to listen for owls, gaze at the stars, or see bats! Bring a flashlight and water, and be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Wearing insect repellant is recommended.

Hikers will meet at Pecan Flats trailhead near the park headquarters at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19th. The program is free, however all entrance fees apply.


4. Dutch Oven Cooking Class

A Dutch oven is a cast iron pot with a lid that can be used for cooking while camping. Learn the basics of cooking in a Dutch oven while learning a little history of the oven itself! Make sure to bring a spoon and a plate to sample some goodies! There will also be some recipes to take home with you.

Participants of this FREE program (entrance fees apply) will meet at the central park area under the big post oak tree at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20th. Be sure to bring your chairs as there may not be enough seating for everyone.


5. Underwater Discovery

Use a seining net to discover what is living in the shallow waters of the lake! Learn about aquatic life like minnows, bugs, and plants. Participants should be prepared to get wet as you will be wading into water several feet deep, though getting into the water is not required.

Participants of this FREE program (entrance fees apply) will meet meet behind the park store on the lake front at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th.
